Studying Rare Languages and Cooperation with the University of Oulu

It is possible to study 'rare' languages at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences by utilising the language courses of the various schools of Oulu UAS. In addition, Oulu UAS students can deepen their language skills through the courses offered at the Languages and Communication unit of the Extension School of the University of Oulu. The study paths of Oulu UAS and rare languages at the University of Oulu have been harmonised as a part of a wide-ranging cooperation project between the two institutions since 2006. The focus has been on studies in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish as well as Finnish for foreigners.

The main cooperation partner at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences has been the School of Business and Information Management. The courses at other schools cannot be harmonised with the courses at the University of Oulu with regard to their extent and content. Further information on cooperation with regard to the study of languages is available from the international relations officer:

Enrolment in Language Studies

Oulu UAS schools

Language studies are offered as voluntary studies. You can inquire about available places on courses, other than those in voluntary studies, directly from the teacher. Information about timetables for courses is available from the teacher and the Student Services of the school in question.

University of Oulu

The student must make arrangements with the language teacher in question to participate in courses organised by the Language and Communication unit of the Extension School of the University of Oulu. Oulu UAS students must decide with their own head of degree programme whether studies undertaken at the Language and Communication unit of the Extension School of the University of Oulu can be included in the qualification. Oulu UAS students may participate in the courses provided there are vacancies. Students will be admitted in the order of enrolment; for some students, such as students applying for exchange studies, etc., they will have the priority.

NB: Starting from the beginning of the academic year 2010–2011, the Language and Communication unit of the Extension School of the University of Oulu does not offer teaching in Spanish or Italian. However, basic courses in these languages are arranged as winter-time education at the Summer University of Northern Ostrobothnia, such as the basic courses for other 'rare' languages. Opportunities to study Chinese at the Language Centre will improve as other courses, except basic courses, become available.

The following information must be given in conjunction with e-mail enrolment:

Participation of University of Oulu Students in Oulu UAS's Courses

University of Oulu students can inquire about places and enrol in OUAS courses directly from the teacher by using the enrolment form.

With one enrolment form students can enrol only for one language course of one school of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences at a time. For each language course a separate enrolment form must be submitted. The enrolment form will be sent to the language teacher of the course either via e-mail as an attachment or by posting it addressed to the teacher in question to the School of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences that offers the course.

The student will be notified of places on the course and its timetable via e-mail. Study attainment certificates will be delivered to the Languages and Communication unit of the Extension School of the University of Oulu.
