English Language Requirements for Transfer Student Selection

You must demonstrate sufficient English language skills if you are applying for transfer from a Finnish degree programme to an English degree programme. A document proving your English language proficiency must be attached to the Studyinfo application form upon request.

When applying to Bachelor of Health Care (Nursing) you must also have at least A2 level Finnish language skills.

You can demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the English language by one of the following methods

The language test result must be valid for a minimum of one day during the application period. The applicant should make sure that the test results are not too old. If the applicant is unsure and the test results are more than 2 years old, it is advised to retake the test. The authenticity of the test results will be checked with the test organiser.

IELTS Academic or IELTS Online

  • Minimum requirement: Overall score 6.0. Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) must be completed
  • Only scanned final test results accepted (no temporary results or screenshots from online pages)

TOEFL Academic iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition

  • Minimum requirement: Overall score 60. Each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) must be compeleted
  • Only scanned final test results accepted (no temporary results or screenshots from online pages)

PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online

  • Minimum requirement: Overall score 55. Each section (Speaking and Writing, Reading and Listening) must be completed
  • Only scanned final test results accepted (no temporary results or screenshots from online pages)

Cambridge English Scale Score

  • Minimum requirement: Overall score 169. Each section (Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking) must be completed
  • Only scanned final test results accepted (no temporary results or screenshots from online pages)

  • Minimum requirement: Grade 4 or higher on all the subtests (speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading comprehension)
  • The test result has no expiration time
  • This test is only available in Finland
  • Only scanned final test results accepted (no temporary results or screenshots from online pages).

  • Degree must be completed in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or the United States

  • Finnish Matriculation Examination: English advanced syllabus with a minimum grade M
  • The whole International Baccalaureate degree completed in English
  • International Baccalaureate final examination: higher level English with a minimum grade 4
  • European Baccalaureate: at least grade 6.00 in L2-level English
  • Reifeprüfung/DIA completed diploma: at least grade 7 in advanced English

You can demonstrate your A2 Finnish language skills as follows:

  • Matriculation examination in Finnish language as mother tongue or Finnish as second national language test, passed. (Grade Approbatur (A)).
  • Matriculation examination in Finnish language, advanced syllabus passed. (Grade Approbatur (A)).
  • Matriculation examination in Finnish language, intermediate syllabus, passed. (Grade Approbatur (A)).
  • Basic education certificate or general upper secondary education certificate completed in Finnish or completion of Finnish as mother tongue in basic education or upper secondary school (Grade ‘pass’).
  • Vocational upper secondary qualification completed in Finnish.
  • Further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification completed in Finnish.
  • Other qualification that provides eligibility for higher education studies completed in Finnish.
  • Higher education degree completed in Finnish.
  • National Certificate of Language Proficiency in Finnish (YKI), passed in level 2 – 6.
