The Degree Programme in Information Technology is offered in the city of Raahe, 75 km south of Oulu, where Raahe School of Engineering and Business is located. It is one of the schools of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The central administration and the other six schools of Oulu University of Applied Sciences are situated in Oulu. Raahe is a beautiful, old, small seafaring town with long traditions in offering a high level of education. The campus area is a successful combination of modern and traditional architecture. The computer classrooms and laboratories are equipped with the latest technology.
The programme in Information Technology is intended for both Finnish and international students who wish to pursue an international career in the field of computer engineering. During the first and second year the student achieves mathematical, scientific and business competence to solve technical problems. In professional studies the student acquires basic knowledge and skills in hardware and software. Engineering skills become deeper during the third and fourth year. The student is able to find, combine and apply the latest technological knowledge of the field.
Having completed studies in mobile technologies the student masters the implementation of wireless embedded systems. Mobile phones are well-known examples of such systems. Also, nowadays cars and household appliances include embedded systems. Graduates from Raahe are diverse specialists in computer engineering and possess versatile engineering skills and knowledge required for industrial assignments, administration and management.
The main emphasis of instruction is on embedded computer systems. Basic studies consist of mathematics, physical sciences, economics and language studies. In the professional studies students can concentrate on the fields of embedded real-time software. Professional studies include courses in information processing, electronics, computer engineering and telecommunications.
The Option of Information Security Technology is focused on the security of software.The student will specialize in design and implementation of secure and robust mobile and ubiquitous applications. Essential subjects are secure software production, secure database systems, security of networks, identification and positioning. Also courses in mathematics, law and ethics can be included.
Typically, graduates start their career as specialists, designers and constructors in various fields. Job description may be software/hardware analyst, software/ hardware designer, programmer etc. Work experience widens career opportunities to create a more competent specialist in management, administration and business assignments. Jobs and tasks may vary because of the changing area of focus in the industry.
Multiculturalism and English as a working language are matters of course on our international campus. Students can also take part in exchange programmes. Students participate in hardware and software projects and learn problem-solving in real environment. As members of a team, students are capable of working in a dependable and punctual manner as well as independently. Practically oriented teaching methods and facilities corresponding to those of industry make students able to find and apply information and skilled at using professional tools and equipment.
The school laboratories and R&D projects offer practical experience and traineeship periods in companies deepen acquired knowledge and skills. Also, close contacts with the students’ prospective employers help the personnel to keep up with industrial development.
