As of 1 January 2005, the scope of the studies is measured in credits. Credits are used to define the amount of work required to attain the objectives of a particular study module. One academic year totals approximately 60 credits corresponding, on average, to a study effort of 1 600 hours.
To simplify assessing accomplished studies, the European ECTS credit system (European Credit Transfer System) is applied to international exchange programmes with European institutes: One Finnish credit corresponds to one ECTS credit.
Assessment of studies is regulated by the Assessment Regulations.
A study module can be assessed in several smaller entities whose priority is decided upon separately. However, only one grade will be given. The grading used can be either numeric, from 0 to 5,
fail (0)
satisfactory (1 - 2)
good (3 - 4)
excellent (5)
or verbal, pass - fail (0).
