The city of Oulu is the largest city, the capital of northern Finland and the sixth largest city in the country. The Oulu Region has over 200.000 inhabitants and is the fastest growing region in Finland. Oulu used to be a town known for wood tar and salmon but has evolved into a major centre of competence in the field of high technology, particularly IT and wellness technology. Wood refining as well as paper and steel industry are other prominent industries in the region.
