The School of Music, Dance and Media was established in 1999. The school has three degree programmes in music, dance teacher education and communication. In academic year 2008-2009 there were 500 students and 50 staff members in the school. The Library of Music, Dance and Media serves the educational needs of the different degree programmes.
All the degree programmes are located in a newly finished campus area, in which technology and culture comes into contact on a daily basis. School of Music, Dance and Media has its' own premises right next to Oulu University of Applied Sciences' School of Engineering. The new premises enable a wide synergy and innovative collaboration between different education programmes.
The Degree Programme in Music includes the options of music pedagogue, pop & jazz music, musician, music instructor and church music, all both as youth and adult education. In addition to these studies the University offers professional specialisation studies.
Music pedagogues and music instructors find employment in teaching, guidance and training duties in basic art education, music and art institutes and liberal adult education. Musicians can work for example as professional orchestral and chamber musicians and accompanists or singers. Graduates from the Option of Church Music find employment as church musicians within the Evangelical-Lutheran Church.
The Degree Programme in Dance Teacher Education includes the options of classical ballet, folk dance, competitive ballroom dance, social dance and show dance. The curriculum of the dance teachers includes 60 credits/ECTS credits of pedagogical studies, which are implemented in co-operation with Oulu University of Applied Sciences' School of Vocational Teacher Education.
The objective of dance teacher education is to educate future dance teachers who are independent, versatile and professionally skilled, and who are able to enthusiastically take care of their duties in their chosen field. The main emphasis in the education is to develop the students’ professional identities as dance pedagogues. Dance teachers find employment in teaching, guidance and training duties in basic art education, music and art institutes and liberal adult education.

The education provides graduates with the knowledge and skills required for work for example as journalists, visual artists and media producers in both traditional and online media, and in different duties in both graphic design, design of media products ((TV, Film, Web, Mobile etc.) and organisational communication.
