Studies in the School of Media and Performing Arts – in the heart of creativity
The School of Media and Performing Arts is a fresh, audible and visible part of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The annual total student quota for studies leading to a degree is about 80. The quota is 40 for the degree programme in communication, 28 for the degree programme in music and 12 for the degree programme in dance teacher education.
In addition, we provide adult education leading to a degree, specialised vocational education and continuing education tailored to the needs of the purchaser. The Open University of Applied Sciences studies are provided at the Kotkantie campus, but also by our partner educational institutions, such as Haapavesi Folk High School. Every year, the degree programmes in the School of Media and Performing Arts also accept applications from potential transfer students coming from similar degree programmes in other Universities of Applied Sciences.
The total annual number of students is about 500. The School occupies new, modern facilities in Kaukovainio, Oulu, sharing the campus with the School of Engineering. The student organisation Kultti ry arranges events for all students of the School of Media and Performing Arts and represents students’ interests.
Teaching and learning in the School is always in close interaction with the employment sector. We emphasise cooperation and learning by doing, which, in practice, takes place through common projects, productions and other efforts. We also put strong emphasis on recognising and acknowledging, also in the learning context, the skills and expertise gained by students before and during their studies. It is possible to complete part of the studies by participating in on-the-job training, taking a competence test or studying abroad as an exchange student.
According to the latest student feedback survey conducted in the spring 2010, the team spirit and general atmosphere in the School are excellent – both among students and between students and teachers. Students say that it is easy to approach teachers, and the School has a genuine community spirit.
