Research and development work in universities of applied sciences is, by nature, applied and practically oriented. Applied research is based on results collected from basic research projects. Its goal is to develop new practical applications, methods or solutions to problems. Development work is innovative and practical, and it focuses on creating new products, production processes and systems or improving existing ones.

In Finland, basic research is mainly carried out in universities. Basic research creates and tests new hypotheses, theories and conformities to existing laws. In the universities of applied sciences, basic research is usually scientific research carried out by the staff.
