Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oulu UAS) has offered English degree programmes in International Business (DIB) since 1998 as a way of meeting the needs of globalising local businesses. Applications to the programme are being accepted from January 9 to February 14, 2012.
According to the head of the degree programme, Mr Jyrki Holappa, the DIB is ideal for those, who are interested in pursuing a career in international trade and marketing. Studies include courses in, for example, marketing, negotiating skills, leadership, languages and information technology.
For Ojo Jane Oshuwa, a Nigerian degree student, the DIB programme was just what she was looking for to fulfill her professional dreams.

Teaching the skills to achieve such goals is the very objective of the programme.
- This programme gives an extensive basis for a number of different career opportunities in the field of business. Our graduates work in Finland or abroad in the fields of trade, sales and marketing, import and export, insurance, international assignments and so on according to their own interests, Jyrki explains.

Jane is happy with her choice.
- I really enjoy the study methodology. I love the teaching environment and the friendly teachers, she sums up her learning experience so far.
- Oulu is a lively student city, where a lot is going on. Oulu UAS is a good learning environment. The School of Business and Information Management has a good support network, for which we have received lots of positive feedback from the students. The students value a pleasant learning environment, friendly teachers and support staff. It supports learning and self-development, Jyrki sums up the strengths of the programme.
Ready for the world
For the programme in International Business, the word 'international' is no exaggeration.
- About half of our 45 degree students are international. In addition, we have 50 to 70 exchange students each year. Our teaching staff is international, too. We have about 20 international visiting professors each year. Furthermore, the degree students have an opportunity to go abroad as an exchange student or to experience international work environment first hand by doing work practice abroad, elaborates Jyrki.
Both Jyrki and Jane think that the international programme helps develop skills in international communication and networking, thus preparing the students for the future in the field.
- Friendships made here are a preexisting international network for the future professionals, notes Jyrki.
Finally, Jane reflects on her learning experience in an international environment.
- I think that internationalism has added a new perspective to my learning quest.
