Primitive forms of bowling may have existed in ancient times as early as A.D. 300 in ancient Finland. What about nowadays?
Oulu’s Bowling alley is full of people. According to Anitta Linnala, the saleswoman in the alley, the night is a basic night.
- Bowling is very popular, she says.
Bowling is a hobby easy to start. In bowling players attempt to score points and try to roll a bowling ball to strike pins.
- For starting bowling you only need a good spirit and a good balance, says Anitta.
- That’s why bowling is a good hobby for everyone, young and old people.

Two girls, one bowling alley
There are lots of students visiting the alley. Two of these students are Riikka Määttä and Anriikka Mentilä.
- We are here just for fun, says Anriikka.
- I like bowling, because you can drink beer while you’re playing. For example you can’t do shooting sports and drink, says Riikka.
For these two girls starting was easy.
- I wanted to try bowling because it looked so nice in movies, Anriikka says.
Girls are also happy because there are other young people bowling at the same time.
- There were so many cars outside the alley we weren’t able to find a parking lot, says Anriikka.
In the alley there are some experts, too. It doesn’t bother girls.
- I’ve bowled about three times, but I’ve developed a lot, Anriikka says.
Even if bowling sounds great, girls have a little to complain about.
It’s a little bit too expensive for students, but if you rent one track for many people, it’s cheaper for everyone, girls say.
And the balls are a bit heavy, added Anriikka.
