The Differences of
Two Northern Countries

Darryl Fulton enjoys of mustard flavoured herring in a jar like a Finn. He’s also surprised by some things, like Finnish underwear. What else has he got to say?

him that much anymore, but on the other hand he can compare the differences.

Prepare for Finland

According to Darryl, Canada is the opposite of Europe. He finds Canada more multi-
cultural and also the way of working very different. He thinks people work hard in Finland, and especially there’s more paper work.

From his experience of studying in Finland he likes to point out something.

One’s success here depends on himself. When you’re motivated, you can achieve great results. What you can’t be doing is just spending time, you need to do the work.

Survive in Finland

The funniest difference Darryl has spotted are the long underwear that Finns wear in

Darryl Fulton, a talkative 25-year-old Canadian, studies International Business in Oulu, Finland. He was interested in the possibility to study the whole degree programme in Europe, and so the North American ended up to

Scandinavia. At the time he has 18 Finnish months behind.

Darryl, the traveling man

Darryl is used to moving from place to place. That’s why new places don’t astonish

wintertime. How do the Canadians survive, then?  In Canada people go everywhere by car, so the cold weather doesn’t bother. You walk only from the door to the car and from the car to the door, he explains.

The ”mad Finns” tend to bike and walk even in temperatures way below zero centigrades.

Darryl admits doing the same himself in Finland, dressed accordingly.

Enjoy of Finland

Luckily studying doesn’t take all Darryl’s time. English language as mother tongue has turned out to be a very useful thing and he enjoys of teaching it to his friends. Maybe Finnish does the same to him with his another hobby: writing sci-fi stories.

Darryl and his friends play floorball, which is very popular in Finland. They also have their very own, special sports: ice hockey – without any equipment.

Darryl, the business man

Someday, maybe not so long from now, Darryl intends to start a business. Perhaps he should import long underwear to Canada?
