DEGREE PROGRAMME IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Master of Engineering
Master of Engineering
60 ECTS cr / 1 - 2 years
Mode of study: full-time
Students will get both general working life skills and methodological and technical expertise. General skills are related to development, learning and communicative and social competences in international environment. An important goal is to learn methods for research and development work, and be able to independently carry out R&D projects related to different areas of information technology. Students also learn to self-evaluate one’s competences and to recognize one’s learning needs. In addition, they will learn to manage in different communicative and interactive situations and apply international knowledge and competences in their own field. Technical expertise focuses on the technology, applications, and future trends of short-range wireless communication and ubiquitous computing. Students learn the principles and basic technologies in these fields. After their studies they will be able to estimate and evaluate the potential of these technologies in various applications and develop new solutions based on these technologies. Besides, students will learn principles and economic aspects of open-source software technologies in the development of embedded systems.
Studies consist of advanced professional studies, free-choice studies and master’s thesis. The advanced professional studies include basic courses in applied mathematics, wireless technology, and open-source software technology. Courses in applied mathematics give background to theoretical studies and versatile R&D-work. In the wireless technology module, theoretical topics, applications and future visions of short-range radio technologies and ubiquitous computing are treated. Potential technologies to be covered are ZigBee, Wibree, RFID, and NFC. Typical applications are positioning, ubiquitous services, or monitoring of the environment. Open-source technology module deals with the basic principles and practical issues of open-source software projects. Master’s thesis is a written report on a R&D-task related to practical development or research project. The graduates will work as experts of ubiquitous computing and short-range radio technologies in industrial companies and public organizations. Typical tasks pertain to evaluation and development of technical solutions to applications based on ambient intelligence.
The practical teaching consists of lessons, workshops, project works, assignments, presentations, company visits, and personal thesis work. Teaching takes place in the evenings. Digital communication means are used between teachers and students. The evaluation of learning is realized by means of written exams, project and assignment reports, and workshop presentations. The maturity of the knowledge is controlled by an essay on focused subject and by the evaluation of the thesis.
