The Degree Programme in Dance Teacher Education fulfils an important role on a national scale in the development of dance culture since it’s the only institute of higher education where social dance, art dance, popular dance and competitive ballroom dance come into contact on a daily basis. The objective of the degree programme is to educate independent, versatile and professionally skilled dance teachers who are able to enthusiastically take care of duties in their chosen field.
In addition to artistic development the main emphasis in the education is placed on developing students’ professional identity as pedagogues. Graduates from the degree programme find employment for example in all-round dance education, guidance of recreational dance activity, basic dance instruction and vocational dance education. In addition to developing students’ personal dancing skills the studies include all-round educational study modules related to dance teaching as well as 60 ECTS credits of pedagogical studies and practical training.
The education emphasizes the planning, teaching and evaluation of dance. During the education students work both as dancers, teachers and choreographers, and as planners and organizers of dance events. Students acquire diversified skills for working in the dance field. Dance technique studies, pedagogical and practical training and subject-specific didactic studies all combine to build a foundation for professional identity.
It is possible to take part of the studies as an exchange student in an international partner institution, where students can advance their knowledge of their field of study and gain valuable experience of different cultures.
Applicants must have either general or field-specific eligibility to apply for admission to an institute of higher education. All eligible applicants will be invited to the entrance examination. In the entrance examination applicants’ dancing skills, musicality, teaching skills and interaction skills are evaluated.
