The Degree Programme in Music is solely responsible for higher education in the field of music in Northern Finland. Its strengths are high-quality instruction, new and up-to-date facilities, instruments and equipment, lively concert activity and strong Nordic, European and inter-continental cooperation.
The educational objective of the Degree Programme in Music is to both foster and develop a centuries-old cultural heritage and address the challenges of our time and future needs. During their studies students develop into versatile professionals who are capable of working independently in the music sector.
Instruction in the degree programme is arranged as both individual and group instruction. The teaching methods are flexible and they guide students towards independent work. Special emphasis is based on personal interaction between teacher and student and comprehensive personal growth.
It is possible to take part of the studies as an exchange student in an international partner institution, where students can advance their knowledge of their field of study and gain valuable experience of different cultures.
Graduates from the options of music pedagogue and musician find employment in vocational music education, basic art education, liberal adult education and other duties that require expertise in music pedagogy or work as orchestral, chamber or ensemble musicians, accompanists, vocalists or church musicians. A Bachelor of Culture and Arts degree makes students eligible to apply for admission to Master’s programmes for example in the Sibelius Academy or in foreign music universities.
Applicants must have either general or subject-specific eligibility to apply for admission to an institute of higher education. In addition they are required to have studied music earlier, generally based on a goal-oriented interest in music that has started in childhood. In the entrance examination applicants’ instrumental, music theory and ear training skills, as well as their interaction skills are evaluated.
