Finnish Polytechnic Chamber Orchestra 2004-2005
The Finnish Polytechnic Chamber Orchestra is a national orchestra composed of music students of eight polytechnics. In the academic year 2004 - 2005 the orchestra will make three training and concert periods in Finland and abroad. The artistic leader and conductor of the orchestra is Atso Almila.
The chamber orchestra project started in the beginning of 2004 is co-ordinated by Oulu Polytechnic School of Music, Dance and Media. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education and the participating polytechnics. The objective of the project is to increase co-operation, benchmarking and networking between the polytechnics in a concrete way and to offer the participating students a possibility to from a pedagogical point of view more concentrated, target-oriented and artistically high-level orchestra work.
The orchestra comprising approximately 30 musicians will be compiled through test plays that will be arranged in autumn 2004. From every participating polytechnic 3 - 4 student musicians will be chosen to the concentrated, working life like periodical work.
The concert localities in Finland will be in the autumn 2004 Tampere and Helsinki and in spring 2005 Kuhmo and Oulu. In spring 2005 concerts will be given also in Slovakia in towns of Bratislava and Piestany. During the tour abroad the partner of the orchestra will be the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava and the orchestra will give concerts as a joint symphony composition with the Slovakian music students.
One of the concerts in Finland is tried to be sent as a live web cast in co-operation with the Kuhmo Chamber Music Centre of Expertise Virtuosi. Oulu Polytechnic's communication students will make a short documentary film about the chamber orchestra project. The manuscript phase is already going on and the shootings will start in the autumn 2004.
