Virtual studying is one form of distance learning where studies are mainly conducted via the internet. To work via the internet, the student must have basic IT skills. E-mail and an internet connection are also required for participation in virtual study modules. A learning platform such as WebCT or Optima is used for many virtual study modules. Learning platforms enable students, for example, to work on their assignments either alone or in a group, receive guidance from teachers and fellow students, obtain study materials and to participate in discussions in the discussion forum.
Virtual studying requires the same amount of time and effort as any other form of studying. The studies emphasise the students’ own ability to plan their work and time management. It is important to remember to reserve enough time for independent studying. Although virtual studies are more flexible than conventional face-to-face teaching in terms of time and place, virtual studies must still be completed within the given timetable.
Learning materials include internet materials prepared for the study module, materials produced by students during the course, books and articles. The forms of study vary between each virtual study module. A study module can include independent study, group work, data search, exercise-based learning and discussions with experts and other students. Virtual study modules can also include a certain amount of face-to-face teaching or a conventional exam.
The virtual University of Applied Sciences site is at www.amk.fi. Virtual courses organised by other University of Applied Sciences can also be found on the site.
Tietie studies are optional vocational studies in information technology, offered through Tietie co-operation. The studies are completed using information networks (Internet sites, learning environments, video conferences, etc.) and they are based on independent study. Tietie studies do not include face-to-face teaching as such, but exams are organised locally at the student’s own University of Applied Sciences.
The Tietie co-operation involves 14 universities of applied sciences throughout Finland, each offering one or more courses as Tietie studies. The Tietie co-operation is co-ordinated by the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. Information on the Tietie studies is available on the HAAGA-HELIA website.
