7E00BF63 Practical Training in Basics of Nursing II (8 cr)
Prerequisites Before the period of practical training the student has passed three exams in medical dosage calculation. Basics of Nursing and Practical Training in Basics of Nursing, Farmakology ja Medications.
Objectives Practical Training in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing:The student has gained knowledge of the most common mental disorders or substance abuse, and is able to assess the patients¿ chances of survival and their needs for care. The student is able to collaborate with the patients or their families comprehensively and take into consideration their life situations. The student develops skills for the nursing of patients and recognises the nurse-patient interactions. The student has gained knowledge about the assistance methods used in mental health care, and is able to interact with his/her patient and give group counselling. The student understands the special characteristics of medications used in the care of psychiatric patients and intoxicant abusers, and is able to administer medication. The student has knowledge of the legislation on mental health and substance abuse nursing and decision-making. The student demonstrates the ability to apply the nursing code of ethics when interacting with the patients. He/she can give appropriate information and act as a member of a working group. He/she has the ability to quide the patient to appropriate

Clinical training in Home Care for the Elderly:
The student is able to assess the resources of the aged, their and their families needs for care, and is able to plan and implement care in order to promote health and rehabilitation of the aged. The student develops skills for being able to act as a nurse in a multi-professional team and network of care and services for the aged. The student has knowledge of elderly nursing and services, and recognises the needs to develop them.
Content Practical Training in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing: Mental health: protective and bruising factors. Changes in patients/families due to psychic diseases/substance abuse/crises. Need for care. Recovery. Assistance methods and heeling interaction. Nursing student-patient relationship as an assistance method. Group counselling. Medications. Administering medications. Oral and written communications.
Service systems, care pathway and networks. Legislation on mental health and substance abuse nursing. Ethical issues.

Clinical training in Home Care for the Elderly:
Knowledge of ethical theory, theoretical knowledge and manual skills for elderly nursing in home care. The student can apply the contents of the course O4008HO into practise.
