Student passwords

Every student at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences has two passwords: Students password and ASIO password.

1. Students password is the password, which you will need for example when you want to read your email, log in to the OUAS data systems e.g. Students intranet Oiva and map your home directory (to a Windows computer at the school network).

NB. Now you're also able to log in to Asio with your Students password if you have enrolled for the term.
Students password will work for one week after your graduation. Same applies also if you decide to finish your studies. Be sure to collect all your important data and e-mail you wish to keep before that.		 2. ASIO-password is the password, which you will need for example when you want to check your study attainment register or update your contact information.

How to form a Students password?

The length of the password must be at least 8 characters, preferably more. Anything under 16 characters is considered a short password, actually nowadays the right term should be passphrase. There should not be any á, ä, ö or å etc. letters in the password, since there might be problems with these characters (if used in a password). Upper case and lower case letters are considered as different characters. According to the complexity requirements, your Students password must fulfill three of the next four items:

In case you choose to use a shorter than 16 characters, remember that then it is especially important that it does not mean anything (it should not be found from dictionaries), and should not be a name, user name or any logical or otherwise known series of characters (for example, qwerty, 12345, abcde, a phone number or identity number).

The password is meant to be known only by the user and should not be given to anyone else. Please do not write the password down (at least in a way that is understandable to someone else).

1. Changing the Students password

Introducing the two alternative ways:

A. Change your password using a computer that is connected to OUAS Network

  1. Log in to the computer using your Students user name and the related password. (For new students logging in for the first time, this is the one you got from your teacher. For others, this is the same old students.oamk.fi user name and password.)
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then choose Change Password (Muuta salasana).
  3. Now write your password, then the new password and confirm it again and press enter.
  4. If all went as desired, you have now managed to change your password.

    NB. There should not be any delay, your password will be updated to all OUAS data systems right away.

B. Change your password on a web page (NB. The language of the web form depends on the language of your browser. If you're using a Finnish language browser it might be a good idea to change the settings to English if you don't understand Finnish. Contact IT services in case you need assistance.)

  1. Go to https://password.oamk.fi/.
  2. Give your username to the first field and your current password to the next.
    Then write your new password to the next two fields and then press OK.
  3. If all went well, you have now changed your password.
    NB. There should not be any delay, your password will be updated to all OUAS data systems right away. If you need to change your password again, it won't be possible before 5 minutes have passed after the last change.

1.1 When should you change your password?

The password should be changed from time to time, for example in between a month or two.

The system might also demand you to change the password if you haven't changed it in three months. Three consecutive passwords have to be different from each other.

1.2 What to do in case you have forgotten your Students password?

The first thing to do is to make sure that you do not have Caps Lock (capital letters) on.

In case you have forgotten your password, you will have to come to the IT-services office. You must have your identity papers with you! If you are unable to come to the office within office hours, you might want to contact the IT-services (helpdesk@oamk.fi) for a suitable time.

2. Changing the password for Student Information System (ASIO)

Please note: All university computers have direct access to ASIO main menu. To access your personal information, ASIO user name and password are required. (Or your Students user name and related password if you are enrolled.) For remote access (=from outside the university) ASIO main menu can be
accessed only after logging in first with students login name and password. After that continue by logging in with ASIO user name and password.

The password for ASIO can be changed from the Student main menu. There is a link "change your password" where you get to change your password: You must give your ASIO user name and password (to the pop-up window) and after that you can change your password. In case you don’t know your ASIO user name, you can get it from the Student Affairs Office.

2.1 What to do in case you have forgotten your ASIO-password?

In case you have forgotten the password you need for student functions (ASIO), you can get a new password from the Student Affairs Office.
