The Degree Programme in Medical Engineering responds to the development challenges of well-being technology and business and provides expertise of the field, aiming at educating internationally competent actors who recognise the potential technology within the social and health care. Graduates of this programme are experts in information technology while also being familiar with the functions of the social and health-care sector. Students of this programme are provided with basic understanding of the crucial concepts such as well-being, human-technology interaction as well as health and functional capacity of humans. In addition, the degree programme includes studies in mathematics, natural sciences, communication, social sciences, entrepreneurship and international co-operation.
In the Option of Home Care Technology the student gets deeper insight into IT products, services and systems related to home care, self-care, rehabilitation and independent living. The student understands the special requirements for R&D and business when aimed at non-professional use or home environment.
The studies are closely linked with studies in the Degree Programme in Information Technology and Telecommunications providing students with skills in programming, communications technology and digital signal processing. The degree programme is in close collaboration with the Medical Engineering R&D Centre that provides opportunities for high quality research projects. In addition, the degree programme has close connections to the local industry and research, which assures the quality of teaching and maintains the studies well up to date. Work opportunities of the field include duties in production, product development and marketing in medical engineering and wellness technology. Furthermore, graduates may work in maintenance, research and development positions in the social and health care sector and as entrepreneurs or experts in research and development laboratories and centres. The language of teaching is mainly Finnish. However, due to the increased international co-operation, there are also specifically tailored project and study possibilities in English for international students.
