NetTutor helps

The NetTutor is a useful way to look for infomation about the city you are coming to and also how the everyday things can be taken care of. It was created to be an information package for exchange students coming and studying in Oulu.

The NetTutor contains a lot of information about everyday needs a student may come across when moving to Oulu. Here are a few tips for the most frequent questions.

Bus card

Travelling daily by a bus can be very expensive if each trip is paid separately. The cheapest way to travel by bus is to buy a monthly bus card from the Bus Company Koskilinjat.

A Bus card for one month costs 35 €. The office of Koskilinjat is located at Hallituskatu 11. The office is open from Monday to Friday 8.30-17.00. Telephone number is (08) 555 0523. When buying a student bus card, the student card which can be obtained from the student union needs to be presented.

A single ticket in a bus costs 2.70 €. The ticket allows one hour bus travel within the city of Oulu. It is also possible to buy a ticket that allows 24 hours travel without limitations. This costs 8 € within the city of Oulu and 12 € for the whole Oulu Region.

An easy way to find bus connections and time tables is to use the Linjakas service. You can define your location and destination and the service will show you when the next bus is coming and also the route in a map.

Mobile phone connection services

There are many different kinds of mobile phone connections available in Finland. In some of them the calls can be very cheap, but the text messages are expensive and vice versa. One option is to buy a prepaid connection, in which the talk time is purchased beforehand and more time can be loaded when the old credits have run out. With this option it is easier to control how much money is spent on telephone bills.

It is possible to buy a prepaid connection for example from an R Kiosk, mobile phone stores or petrol stations. A normal subscription to a mobile phone you can buy for instance from mobile phone stores like Päämies, Elisa or Dna.

Some appliance stores like Gigantti, Markantalo, Kärkkäinen and Musta Pörssi also sell subscriptions. You can choose between many operators like Saunalahti, Dna, Sonera, Kolumbus etc.

Health care

Health care for students can be found find from Kontinkangas. There are public health nurses and doctors at your service to help you in the Student Health Care Clinic.

You should always make an appointment for the public health nurse or the doctor. Nursing services are free or charge. Visits to a doctor cost 11 € per visit for the three first visits in a calendar year. Also remember that a penalty fee of 25 € will be charged if you cancel or do not use a reserved appointment.
