Artificial intelligence for more efficient research projects

Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk) and Iris.ai andannounce an agreement to improve the efficiency and productivity of Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) project preparation.

For researchers both in academia and industry, grant application writing is a disproportionately large part of their daily lives. Funding is an ongoing challenge for most researchers, and the grant opportunities are usually highly competitive and require not only an important and promising area of research - but also a high amount of preparatory work for mapping out state-of-the-art and ensuring novelty of the research. For example, EU’s H2020 program has since its inception in 2014 received more than 700,000 grant applications, of which 25,686 has been funded. The competition is fierce, and novelty is of key importance - which means a project’s literature review should not only be done on research papers, but also on previously funded grants.

Iris.ai has built a suite of artificial intelligence-based tools to semi-automate the literature review process. These tools save researchers up to 78% of their time while increasing the interdisciplinarity of the results.

Iris.ai is a cross-European startup that has built an award-winning AI engine for machine understanding of scientific text. They have for years built a set of technologies aimed at making researchers’ lives easier and are now teaming up with Oamk to tackle the overwhelming amount of research proposals that new projects need to take into account. The tools will be as useful for the researchers preparing their projects as for the university setting their strategic direction - and the funding bodies themselves.

Oamk is one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Finland and key player in the Oulu region’s innovation system. With a long tradition in RDI, Oamk now has an ambitious goal of becoming more visible in international arenas of RDI. With the Oulu region’s world class competencies in ICT, digitalization, AI and startup development, both Oamk and Iris.ai are excited to work together to form a new application for Iris.ai’s core engine, aiming to solve a frustrating process of grant application.

Applying the Iris.ai engine on all EU-funded projects since 2014, the new collaboration aims to improve the efficiency and productivity of RDI project preparation, especially in tightly competed European project funding. Giving researchers the ability to map out state-of-the-art funded research, new projects can be rapidly targeted to novel research challenges.

In this joint Proof-of-concept project with Iris.ai, Oamk will pilot the new tools in H2020 project preparation in the fields of printed intelligence, drones and development of regional innovation systems. This PoC is partly funded by ERDF project “EU-osaamisen nosto”, coordinated by Oamk.
