TF00BO46 Architectural Building Design of Public Buildings (15 cr)
Prerequisites Suitable preceding building design studies.
Objectives Building Design:
To be able to acknowledge user?s needs and functional boundary conditions in public building design.
To know space dimensioning and to be able to plan a simple production building and a small public building.
To be able to master spatial sizing and to be able to do outline design of simple production or smallish public building.
To understand the basis of spatial and functional solutions for premises- and production buildings, and special features in these types of buildings (arrangements in internal and external traffic etc.).
To be able to apply construction and fire regulations.
Architecture:
To know the basic examples and forces of modern architecture in public building.
To understand social and technical backgrounds and trends in modern architecture.
To be able to apply modern architectural design technics in small-scale public building design projects.

House Construction.
To be able to describe production- and public building premise?s functional principles of building elements and structures. To be able to apply them in construction engineering planning. To know superstructures and structures of envelopes, which are used in production and premises building, and their typical solutions.

Professional English (scope 2 crs):
To be able to understand and interpret field-specific literature and articles both in writing and speaking. To know expressions used for describing dimensions, spaces and architectural characteristics of buildings and designs. To be able to present a public building orally and/or in writing.

Content Building Design:
Current phenomenon and trends of architecture, theoretical approaches in design.
Modern architecture of public buildings and their examples (homeland and abroad) especially small scale schools, libraries, premises, production buildings.
The effect of technical solutions and choices on building design and architecture.
Production buildings and premises space dimensioning on renovation- and project development level.
Essential structural solutions, materials, basics of planning of superstructures and their dimensioning, construction and fire regulations. Planning Building physics.
Energy efficient solutions in construction planning.

House Construction:
The content of a building project in production projects and projects of premises. Essential structural features in production- and premises building. To take into account energy efficiency and sustainable development. Various superstructures and their use in production- and premises buildings. Their details and detail planning.

Professional English (scope 2 credit points):

Terminology and vocabulary connected to architecture in general.
English in public construction.
Presentations and exercises of remarkable international buildings and current trends/phenomena in modern architecture.
