Important update regarding practical training in health & social care in autumn 2020

    Last updated: 22 April 2020 at 10:15
    Originally published: 22 April 2020 at 10:00

Unfortunately, the hospitals in the Oulu region (Oulu University Hospital and Oulaskangas Hospital) had to cancel practical training for exchange students in autumn 2020.

The decision was taken on 21 April at 15.00 as a precautionary measure considering the Covid-19 disease and resourcing at local hospitals. Oamk has acknowledged this decision as well.

The following fields are currently affected from cancellations of practical training in autumn:

    Fields entirely affected:

    • Health Care & Nursing in Oulu and Oulainen
    • Radiography & Radiation Therapy

    Fields partially affected:

    • Physiotherapy
    • Occupational Therapy

Further updates are possible concerning other fields and third parties normally providing practical training in health and social care. Please check this page for possible updates throughout spring and summer.

In the light of this decision, we advise all our applicants in health and social care to plan your exchange including only theoretical studies from our field-specific programmes.

At the moment, our departments are making initial plans for studies that may possibly substitute for cancelled practical training. Some theoretical studies include also hands-on teaching, so please check our programmes thoroughly for possible alternative courses.

For example, we recommend the following course across all fields:
YY00CP40-30032 Human Centered Design, Innovation and Impact, 5 ECTS cr. See also this link. This course will take place as an intensive workshop from 7 until 18 December. Timetables may need to be checked once more at the beginning of your exchange.

We will further update this website during spring and summer, if need be. Please apply in time and by the deadline, 15 May. We shall reassess the situation of practical training in all fields after the application deadline and will get back to you at the latest in June.

For questions, feel free to contact Bastian.

    Health Care & Nursing (Oulu)

Welcome to study in Oulu, a vibrant city in Northern Finland. It hosts Oamk's Kontinkangas campus, Oulu University Hospital, local health care centres as well as the Oulu City Hospital.

You may pursue field-specific regular and online courses and, if available, our advanced practical training course throughout our terms and mobility periods, see more below.

Please note that seats and the scope or workload (ECTS cr) of practical training are limited, and you must apply in time. Practical training is available in the fields mentioned below. Please choose three (3) fields in your application (motivation letter) and in the order of your preferences, so we can better look for possible places. Considering autumn 2020, please note the information above regarding cancellations of practical training!

All courses listed in the exchange study programmes are instructed in English. The scope (ECTS cr) of some of the courses may be tailored. N.B.! Only courses from one study programme and the offered full or short terms can be taken due to timetabling constraints. Check the course descriptions by clicking on the course codes. If you have further questions about the course content, please contact Virpi, our international academic coordinator in nursing in Oulu. For other questions, please get in touch with Bastian, our international administrative coordinator.

  • Interdisciplinary Studies

Our university offers opportunities for interdisciplinary projects in the frame of an exchange for either studies or traineeships. Please check what we offer in 2019-2020. Information for 2020-2021 will be updated here at the latest in March 2020.

    Game LAB (Autumn 2020)

Game LAB is an English-medium non-degree programme offered by Oamk in autumn 2020 and it is based on former Oamk LABs (*).

The programme is suitable for 3/4-year Bachelor's and Master's level students of graphic design, ICT/programming, business/marketing, producing, music.

Game LAB has to be pursued as a whole (30 ECTS cr) due to pedagogical considerations. In autumn 2020, the group ID for the programme and courses will be as follows:

    Autumn 2020 (group ID): EXY20SGLD

YY00BR00-3024 Concept Creation (Game LAB), 15 ECTS cr
YY00BR01-3022 Demo Creation (Game LAB), 15 ECTS cr

In Game LAB, you will deepen your knowledge and skills in game development. At first you will generate and pitch project ideas among students. You will then work on a project in interdisciplinary student teams following a business-driven approach.

Throughout Game LAB, your student team will be guided and coached by academic/professional staff of Oamk and relevant industry/company representatives. You can pursue Game LAB either as a study or traineeship exchange.

The focus of the Game LAB projects is nowadays on rapid product development (idea to product in less than 4 months):

    • Projects have a very narrow scope
    • Target platform is mobile / 2D / 3D
    • We have 2-3 test rounds - to validate your product
    • Projects are ended by means of retrospectively looking into the learning outcome and failures of the demo products and team work.

In a nutshell, we are providing a very quick and harsh dip into the game industry.

If need be, you may obtain more detailed course descriptions by clicking on the course links above, or from the course search website of Oamk by entering the course code and/or name, We advise to search for courses by its basic code (e.g. Y0002EE) or by name (e.g. Finnish Survival Course). You can also pursue the Finnish Survival Course in addition to the Game LAB courses mentioned above.

In case of questions, please refer to incoming.students#oamk.fi (korvaa # -> @).

(*) Oamk LABs was a unique and internationally renown pedagogical model developed and implemented at Oamk 2012-2019. DevLAB and EduLAB have ended in autumn 2019. EduLAB has been rebranded and may be compensated for by Digital Publishing LAB. Game LAB focuses nowadays on rapid product development, as outlined above.

Have a look at videos (short / long version) giving insight into the original Oamk LAB approach through the eyes and words of students. Here is also an article about the Oamk LAB pedagogical model.

    Demola (Autumn / Spring)

Demola can be pursued along with another programme at Oamk as short-term (2-month) project studies by higher education students from different fields, such as IT, business, engineering, media & design, health and social care. As a Demola student, you'll work in a small team and in English, helping companies and organisations to solve real-life innovation challenges in global online projects.

Demola offers various global online projects in the following working periods:

    • 2020-2021
      Projects 25.9.-20.11., application deadline 17.9.
      Projects 23.10.-18.12., application deadline 15.10
      Projects 7.12.-5.2., application deadline 29.11.

Each Demola project has a workload of 10 ECTS cr, so make sure it fits into another programme of your choice. You can add to your experience also a Finnish Survival Course for 3 ECTS cr, even though all Demola projects' working language is English:

YY00CG24 Demola Project, 10 ECTS cr
Y00022E Finnish Survival Course, 3 ECTS cr

So, if you are up for the challenge, apply directly to Demola following Demola's application process. The application will direct you to leave an open application and you should apply to any upcoming project globally and online (!), as soon as the projects have been acquired and published. Please consult our Demola application guidelines with screenshots.

As soon as you have applied, Demola will review your application and make internal admission decisions in due course of time. We from Oamk will follow-up with you and share information about admission, housing, mobility documentation and enrolment etc.

Please note that Oamk's admission and learning agreement including Demola is always conditional, as Demola makes admission decisions for global online projects. You can pursue a Demola project currently only in combination with a regular physical exchange and another programme offered at Oamk.

If you are applying to Demola, please notify us also at incoming.students#oamk.fi (korvaa # -> @). In case of questions about the content and delivery of Demola, please contact Demola. If you will be accepted by Demola, please inform us at incoming.students#oamk.fi (korvaa # -> @) and also indicate your project and the duration (2 months) including the start and end date.

In addition, Demola is available for application for double degree students in the beginning of the student exchange at Oamk. If you are pursuing a double degree at Oamk and are interested in Demola, please contact your programme-specific international academic coordinator or head of degree programmes for further advice.
