Exchange Studies

Kindly note that it is possible to apply to and pursue studies only from one of the offered programmes, due to timetable constraints. You should choose courses according to your home university's workload requirement and Oamk's recommendation, which is usually 30 ECTS cr per semester. You are also required to stay for the whole mobility period, as long as learning activities last.

  • Business

    Welcome to do business with us!

    The exchange study programme in Business focuses on developing various skills required in the field of innovative international business providing students the ability to work in international environment. In addition to numerous exchange students from our partner universities worldwide, you will be working with our Degree Students of both Finnish and international origins. Download a leaflet.

    During your studies in the Autumn, you will be able to develop your creative competencies and apply them in business - be it developing current practices or innovating new solutions. Moreover, you will learn about professional selling skills and service marketing. 

    During your studies in the Spring, you will be able to develop your international marketing competences with the second or third year degree students.  You will be able to increase your competences in job search, career planning and learn to market those recognized competences accordingly. Additionally, you will understand the phenomena related to e-business and digital marketing.

  • Engineering

    Our university offers opportunities to study engineering in many different study programmes.

    Automation engineering

    Automation is present everywhere: in cars, at home, in heating and security solutions, and in any systems that ensure the supply of clean water, energy and food. As an exchange student, you are studying at the Energy and Automation department. Your studies consists of lessons, laboratory work and large projects. You study together with our third-year students.

    Building Services

    In the degree program of building services engineering the focus is in heating, plumbing and ventilation engineering of real estate. The aim is to educate engineers, who master technical systems of buildings. Climate change and increasing energy requirement are the issues, that specialists in the field of heating, plumbing and air conditioning are searching solutions for.

    As an exchange student you will study spring semester in a project, in which you design heating, plumbing and ventilation for particular buildings. In project you use software, which are used also in companies in the field of HVAC engineering: CADS and MagiCAD. Project studies provide you good skills, if you want to work in design of heating, plumbing and ventilation or in contracting as a project manager.

    The prerequisites for the project are as follows:

    • dimensioning of ventilation pipes, dimensioning of cooling and choice of the devices needed
    • knowledge of the building regulations and fire regulations
    • in heating technique, basis for the heat production and dimensioning, dimensioning of pipe systems, choice of batteries and of other devices
    • basis for the water supply systems and sewer systems.

    You should be at least 2nd year student in engineering degree programme (BEng) and have a basic knowledge in energy technology. Courses in the project are on 3rd year in our curriculum. The studies will be located in our Kotkantie Campus.

    Civil engineering

    ”The North is an inspiration to Civil Engineering”

    The aim of the Degree Program in Civil Engineering is to educate professionals in civil engineering for local and national as well as international construction industry. The students are prepared to work in design and leadership positions at building sites as well as in management duties in construction projects.

    The Degree Program in Civil Engineering is actively involved in different international projects in order to ensure that the education remains closely in line with the international construction trends. The courses also include building site visits and specialist lectures given by visiting representatives from working life.

    In the Degree Program in Civil Engineering you can study House Building Engineering or Municipal Engineering. Exchange students can study either during the Autumn term (30 credits) or the Spring term (30 credits), or it is also possible to study the whole study year (60 credits).

    To exchange students we offer Bachelor-level house building and municipal engineering modules of the different study years.

    Construction Architecture

    "Creativity rises from Nordic nature."

    The degree program in Construction Architecture provides students with strong competence in construction design especially for housing construction in northern areas and with knowledge of the structural and technical basics of building design. The studies proceed to implementation and construction drawings of buildings. The focus is on energy efficiency, refurbishment, building information modeling (BIM) and visualization.

    As an exchange student you can choose a study entity for the Autumn term given to 3rd-year students in the Degree Program in Construction Architecture. In addition, you can choose courses that are common with the civil engineering students. Project learning is utilized in many of the courses, meaning that real problems commissioned by companies are solved. The courses also include building site visits and specialist lectures given by visiting representatives from working life.

    Electrical Engineering

    Electricity is present in our daily lives. There is no field in the industry, whose operation and development would not depend on electro-technical solutions.

    As an exchange student, you are studying at the Energy and Automation department. Your studies consists of lessons, work in laboratories and work in a project. You will participate in a Building Automation project.

    Energy Technology

    Energy is a major part of today's life and present almost all human activities. The aim of the energy technology degree program in Oulu University of Applied Sciences is to provide the ability to design small and regional energy production systems and energy applications of various energy systems.

    As an exchange student, you are studying at the Energy and Automation department for a spring semester energy project, which solves real business problems. During the project, student groups contact companies, learn project work and create documentation, solve real problems and learn a whole new dimension of energy field. Spring semester will culminate at Energy exhibition, where the students present their project and results. The studies will be located in our Kotkantie Campus

    Mechanical Engineering

    Passion for mechanical design combined with top know-how and long traditions since 1894. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is, despite its great age, a very trendy and active player in the latest technical development. We educate inventive and creative experts to meet the needs of various lines of businesses.

  • Health & Social Care

    Our departments in health and social care are offering various exchange study programmes in English during 2019-2020. Information for 2020-2021 will be published here in the end of March 2020.

    For more information on the studies and courses offered, visit the sections below to obtain details of the field-specific exchange study programmes. Each programme includes a choice of timetabled regular and online courses and, if applicable, a practical training course with limited seats and scope. You can also study Finnish Survival Course along with any programme! In the beginning of May 2020 we will also offer a two-week interdisciplinary workshop on human centred design.     Exchange durations in health and social care

    We prefer and recommend full-term exchanges with a workload/scope of approx. 30 ECTS cr per term in order to get the best possible mobility learning experience.

    Oulainen is small rural town located about 100 km south of Oulu. It hosts Oamk's Oulainen campus and health centre and local hospital.     Practical training courses and full traineeships in health and social care in 2019-2020

    Our departments in health and social care offer practical training courses for a limited number of applicants and a limited workload/scope in ECTS cr (e.g. 6 ECTS cr) within the field-specific exchange study programmes and normally during regular terms only. In this way, you may pursue also other courses supporting your practical training. For example, we offer a Finnish Survival course (3 ECTS cr) and a number of timetabled online and regular courses during our academic terms.

    If you want to pursue and apply for a full traineeship in health and social care (3-month traineeship for higher education students, approx. 1-month traineeship for vocational education students in nursing in Oulainen), please check our information in the "Traineeship in Health and Social Care" section.

    Enquiries and nominations about practical training courses or full traineeships should be directed to incoming.students#oamk.fi (korvaa # -> @).

    Practical training courses and full traineeships in health and social care must be applied to via MoveON according to our deadlines, in autumn by 30 April, and for spring by 30 September. Late applications won't be accepted!

    Admitted trainees in health and social care (apart from optometry) must meet our vaccination requirements and submit a health certificate before the commencement of the practical training course or full traineeship.

  • Information Technology

    Business Information Systems

    ICT sector is ever growing. Digitalization of goods and services is changing our society rapidly. Studying business information systems will provide you with versatile ICT knowledge and skills that help you to work in an expert role in any business or organization that focuses on utilization or implementation of digital products and services. Examples of these are games, web-sites, web-shops and services, social media applications, mobile services and IoT-technology based services.

    You will learn skills related to designing, implementing and testing of digital products and services. In addition, you will learn how to work in different roles in various software projects during the year. Download a leaflet.

    The study year will consist of four modules. Each module is 12-15 credits. The studies will be located in Teuvo Pakkalan katu campus. We also have a Double Degree Exchange Programme in Business Information Systems BIS with Neu-Ulm.

    In order for you to participate in the modules you should have the basic knowledge of the following: programming, front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and databases. Basic knowledge on PHP or other similar backend scripting language is recommend as well. All lectures are in English so you will need good verbal and written language skills. Positive attitude and good teamwork skills are also helpful.

    Information Technology

    Oulu is highly known for its ICT – technology and innovations. This can also be seen in the field of technology at the school of Engineering. As an ICT engineer you are able to design and realize various software solutions and applications. Software development skills and business knowledge are developed in real-world projects. All real-world projects and practical training enable you to network with work life already during your studies. 

    Web Development

    The degree Programme in Information Technology emphasises Web Development. The studies consist of software development, web and mobile application technologies and IoT technologies. The studies will be located in Kotkantie Campus.

    Oamk LABs (Autumn)

    Oamk LABs are English-medium non-degree programmes offered by Oamk in the autumn. Both 3-/4-year Bachelor's and Master's level students from different educational fields are working together in interdisciplinary teams in order to develop demos of products or services for various industries, see more below.

    As of autumn 2019 Oamk LABs consist of a Demo Path (30 ECTS cr) by which demos of products or services are developed for an entire term, first by pitching ideas and then by working in teams on the project in an interdisciplinary and business-driven approach. Several gates will be arranged to move ahead with the most potential projects.

    Throughout the Oamk LABs, student teams are guided and coached by academic/professional staff of Oamk and relevant industry/company representatives. The Demo Path can be pursued either as a study or traineeship exchange.


    Oulu Game LAB

    is suitable for 3/4-year Bachelor's and Master's level students of graphic design, ICT/programming, business/marketing, producing, music. Students deepen their knowledge and skills in game development.

    Demola (Autumn / Spring)

    Demola projects "Dark North" is a traineeship programmme for higher education students from different fields, such as IT, business, engineering, media & design, health and social care. Companies from Oulu, Finland, are looking for up to 40 trainees for a period of 2 months. As a Dark North trainee, you'll work in small teams and in English, helping companies to solve real-life innovation challenges.

    In autumn 2019 and spring 2020 Demola offers various projects for a short-term (2-month) traineeship exchange approx. in the following working periods:

    • Q1: 10 February – 24 April (75 days) (application to projects approx. December)
    • Q3: September-November (application to projects approx. August)
    • Q4: October-December (application to projects approx. September)

    Each project has a workload of approx. 10 ECTS cr. A Finnish Survival course (3 ECTS cr) can add to your experience, even though the projects' working language is English:

    So, if you are up for the challenge, apply directly to Demola following Demola's application process to the "Dark North".     As soon as you have applied, Demola will review your application and make internal admission decisions in due course of time. We from Oamk will follow-up with you and share information about admission, housing, mobility documentation and enrolment etc. The Demola project can be carried out as an Erasmus+ traineeship or regular practical training via Oamk.

    Human Centered Design, Innovation and Impact (Spring)

    Want to learn how to develop human centred products? Interested to understand what is design thinking and LEAN development and how they work in practice? Eager to learn how to observe and study real problems within context? What about brainstorming and conceptualising ideas and developing these further? Keen on working together and implementing the solution idea in an interdisciplinary team? If your answer to these questions is yes, then our workshop in spring is a must to go for you:

    Oamk offers an intensive workshop for two weeks, 4 - 15 May 2020. Learning is fully learning by doing. During the workshop a lot of different methods for agile human centred development are explored and used. You will also learn more how to pitch your ideas.

    The workshop is suitable for exchange students from various fields with at least two years of prior studies. The workload is 5 ECTS cr. For more information, please consult the course description.

    If you wish to apply for the course, kindly use YY00CP40-3002 Human Centered Design, Innovation and Impact (5 ECTS cr) in your learning agreement. Please mention your interests in your motivation letter and attach it to MoveON.

  • Media and Performing Arts

    Our department of media and performing arts offers exchange studies in English in the field of media, dance and music during 2019-2020.  Interdisciplinary project studies are also offered in the autumn term for all kinds of media students. Information for 2020-2021 will be updated here in March 2020.

    N.B.! Only courses from one exchange study programme can be taken due to timetabling constraints. Each media programme can only be pursued on the whole (30 ECTS cr) for pedagogical reasons. Dance and music students are also encouraged to benefit from a full semester workload in their respective programmes.  Applications are only accepted during the regular application period, and intake may be limited depending on the programme.

    Journalistic LAB (Spring)

    Journalistic LAB (EXM20KJOL- click the link to obtain the Excel course list ) is an English-medium exchange/non-degree programme (30 ECTS cr) offered by Oamk in the spring term 2020. The programme is for 3-/4-year students with a suitable background in journalism. The intake is limited to up to approx. 5 exchange students.

    Students deepen their knowledge and skills in creating journalistic products. The core of the studies is in creating journalistic content in different media forms. Student teams will have the opportunity to influence the format of the journalistic product they are working on. Teaching is adapted to the needs of student projects.

    HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN NORTHERN FINLAND

    The department of natural resources offers an exchange programme in English in the field of agriculture and rural industries during 2019-2020. In Oamk you will meet a modern learning environment, not only on the campus but also hands-on learning experience in Oulu Region. It means group work and individual tasks, which are closely connected to real life and local people. The tasks offer you an opportunity to get a view of farming and other rural livelihoods as well as environmental issues in Finland.     You may pursue professional teacher education exchange studies by building your own personal study programme. You will become acquainted with Finnish education by acting as an assistant teacher at a school (teaching practice course, see below). You will have the opportunity to learn about pedagogical methods, student assessment, implementation of special education & support, the vocational training environment, etc.

    In addition to the above, you can supplement skills with optional teacher studies, as listed below. The extent of the studies to be completed is typically between 6 and 20 ECTS cr.
