  • Study Counselling

The objective of student counselling is to help and support the student to complete a Bachelor's Degree of a high quality. Study counsellors at the various schools of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences offer assistance in drawing up the personal study plan and career planning.

Campus student counsellors are responsible for overall counselling, guidance and support facilities. Support facilities of the students with special needs are a specific area of responsibility: for example students with learning difficulties and students under threat of extension or abandoning their studies.

    Study Counselling Services

In the Oulu UAS the students are responsible for their learning and for the fluency of their studies. However, the students are not alone: there are many possibilities to get support from the study counselling services.

In the Oulu UAS the three most central sectors of the counselling are the counselling of learning and studying, the counselling of career planning and vocational growth and supporting of personal growth and welfare. The counselling of learning and studying concentrates on the studying process. The students are directed to identify their strengths and their developing challenges. Students are supported to get through the challenges of different stage of studies, among others, with the help of the personal study plan (HOPS). The development of the students’ occupational identity and their developing understanding of how they can utilize their studies in their future profession are supported by counselling of career planning and vocational growth. The supporting personal growth and welfare is acknowledging the students’ individual situation and experiences of life, counselling and supporting their psychosocial development.

    Valtti

Valtti – Completed Degree as a Trump (= Valtti) to the Working Life

The popular Valtti-groups are arranged every year. In the groups the students discuss matters concerning studies and the student life, challenges and successes.

Different themes in the groups are for example:

    • Time management and motivation
    • Difficulties in writing the thesis
    • Finishing the uncompleted courses
    • Self-knowledge and recognizing your own competences
    • Graduation and entering working life

  • Accessibility in Studies

All our students have the right to accessible studies. Our aim is to treat all students fairly and equally. The Non-Discrimination Act obliges universities of applied sciences to acknowledge different students. We try to organise teaching methods, and learning and operating environments that serve all students and help them graduate within their target time.

    Physical environment

The accessibility of our higher education institution’s campus areas (see campus maps) is particularly functional. There are special arrangements for accessibility:

    • Each location’s parking site has marked disabled parking spaces.
    • The accessible entrance doors of the Linnanmaa campus are the main entrance C and door C5. At Kontinkangas campus, the Louhi building’s main entrance is accessible. At Oulainen campus, the main entrance is accessible.
    • Each campus has a wheelchair for visitors: please ask the janitors if you wish to borrow it.  The campuses have sufficient room to move with mobility aids.
    • The ICT services of the Linnanmaa campus can lend visitors an induction loop package that can be used at any facility. The Paasi building of the Kontinkangas campus has facilities equipped with an induction loop. The auditorium of the Oulainen campus has an induction loop.
    • Each campus has several accessible toilets.
    • The campuses have lifts that facilitate mobility.

    Support and guidance

In our higher education institution, teacher tutors, heads of degree programmes and campus study counsellors provide students with information and support to plan their studies. Our institution’s website contains abundant and clear information to support study planning.

Students who have difficulties with learning (examples in Figure 1) can ask the teacher for support measures to help complete the study module.

Figure 1. Examples of learning difficulties

If you have been diagnosed with a learning difficulty, please contact your campus study counsellor (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Path to receive possible support measures

The campus study counsellors plan the most suitable individual arrangements to support studies with the student. Support measures include

    • personal study plan
    • additional time to complete an exam, at least 20 minutes per hour
    • workshops to support the progress of studies
    • lecture materials in advance
    • alternative performance
    • instruction for digital aids
    • opportunity to have oral tests/tasks or to supplement tests orally
    • opportunity to take a test in several parts
    • additional guidance with thesis work, for example
    • Celia services.

The student’s responsibility is to inform the teacher sufficiently about their situation so that the teacher can provide them with the necessary support. The personal arrangements take into account both the study module’s and the degree programme’s learning objectives. The teacher’s task is to assess the achievement of learning objectives and ensure student equality.

  • eCounselling

eCounselling is a service portal that includes both eCounselling and eGuidance services for students.

  • Study Psychologist

The study psychologist services are available for degree students of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

  • Sport Services

The academic sport services and other welfare services of Oulu's Institutes of Higher Education are listed on www.oulunkorkeakoululiikunta.fi.

  • Insurance

Our students are insured by insurance company Pohjola Insurance. Please contact Academic Affairs soon after an incident, since the notice of accident claim has to be done in 10 days. Contant information can be found at the bottom of this page.

In case of accident, student must file a notice of accident claim to Pohjola Insurance themself.  The required policy code is 40-439-722-3 and Oamk's business ID is 2509747-8.

    The students’ insurance includes:

    • statutory accident insurance, which covers accidents that occur while taking part in the unpaid practical training that is included in the curriculum.
    • voluntary accident insurance, which covers accidents in other education than mentioned above. This insurance also covers accidents that occur on the way from home to the university of applied sciences, on breaks and during physical exercise that is included in the curriculum.
    • liability insurance for the practical training period (damage caused to the employer or the property of a third party)
    • travel insurance for students is valid during trips included in the curriculum. Such trips are e.g. trips related to student exchange and practical training.

The types of insurance listed above do not cover students' own property and leisure time. Students should check if their private insurance is adequate because the above-mentioned types of insurance do not cover, for example, distance learning. In case of damages, students should contact the insurance contact person of their Campus. The contact person will also provide more information on insurances in general.

    Statutory accident insurance

This insurance covers accidents that occur while taking part in the practical training that is included in the curriculum.

In case of an accident student needs to provide an insurance certificate for the hospital etc. Students can get the insurance certificate from the Academic Affairs. Generally the insurance certificate will be provided for the hospital when seeking for treatment. In urgent cases, the certificate can also be delivered to the hospital afterwards, when the treatment has already begun.

In case of an accident, student needs to contact the Academic Affairs to make the notice of accident claim as soon as possible and to get instructions for further procedure. The notice of accident claim has to be done in 10 days, so contact your insurance contact person as soon as possible.

In case of an accident that doesn’t require immediate treatment, the Academic Affairs will check the insurance coverage from the insurance company.

    Voluntary accident insurance

The insurance is valid at the school premises during actual school time, education, physical education, breaks and when participating in activities arranged within the limits of the school’s curriculum as well as during round trips in direct connection with such activities.

Also expenses for necessary trips to and from school relating to a compensable accident are compensated as medical treatment expenses when the trip to or from school has been made with an exceptional vehicle due to doctor’s orders.

    Liability insurance

Liability insurance covers damages caused to the employer or the property of a third party during practical training.

    Travel insurance

Travel insurance for students is valid during trips included in the curriculum. Such trips are e.g. trips related to student exchange and practical training.

During student exchange and practical training, the insurance is valid on weekends and during school and practical training holidays when the student is on holiday in the same city where he/she studies or carries out practical training and returns to the place of study or practical training after the holiday.

However, the insurance is not valid when the student before the commencement of a term or practical training travels to the country where he/she shall study or carry out practical training to spend his/her holiday and get acquainted with the place of study or practical training or when he/she during holidays travels from the place of study or practical training to another city or country to spend his/her holiday.

Furthermore, the insurance is not valid after the studies or practical training, should the student stay for holiday in the country of study or practical training.

Students are asked to collect a travel insurance card from the Academic Affairs before going abroad. In case of an accident, student needs to contact Academic Affairs to make a notice of accident claim and to get instructions for further procedure. The notice of accident claim has to be done in 10 days, so contact your Academic Affairs soon after the incident.
