DEGREE PROGRAMME IN BUSINESS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

 
BASIC STUDIES60
The aim of basic studies is to provide the student with a comprehensive overall view of the position and significance of the field concerned within society and working life and in an international perspective, to familiarise the student with the general theoretical basis of the field and with communications, and to provide the student with the sufficient language proficiency necessary for practising the profession and for further professional development.(Vararehtorin päätös 24.2.2014 § 16)

As a result of the basic studies module, the student is capable of planning her/his studies and improving her/his learning strategies. During the studies s/he becomes acquainted with the background, present situation and future of the information society and knows how to use different information retrieval services.

The student knows how to communicate in relevant communicative situations of her/his field in the native language and English and Swedish (students having completed Finnish school education).

The student knows how to use office software applications. The student becomes familiar with basic terms, concepts and tools related to information systems and their development and the student learns the basic computer programming skills. S/he is acquainted with the basic components of microcomputers and knows how to manage their functions.

The student understands the basics of business economics.

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES90
The aim of professional studies is to familiarise the student with the main problems and applications in the professional field concerned and their scientific or artistic basis in order to allow the student to work independently in the field in either expert duties or development work, or as entrepreneur. (Vararehtorin päätös 24.2.2014 § 16)

During professional studies the student will learn the basic knowledge and skills required from the specialists working in the fields of software development, systems support or digital media when developing information systems for business processes. After the studies the student is able to e.g. build and install a small-scale web application, to manage software products, to carry out research tasks and to work in an international team.

OPTIONAL LANGUAGES IN PROFESSIONAL STUDIES6
The aim is to enhance the internationalisation competence of future IT professionals.
 

All students must take 6 credits of optional language studies. The student can enhance her/his English skills. Optional Finnish language studies are recommended for foreign students who plan to work in Finland. Studies in Spanish, French, German and Russian can be started at the elementary level or at the level based on upper secondary school studies. Japanese is offered only at the elementary level. Through cooperation with Oulu University in language instruction, the selection of courses available to students has increased (e. g. Italian and Chinese). Notice that all language courses require a preset minimum number of participants and therefore the timing of courses is subject to change.

The student will select 15 credits of courses according to her/his own choice. However, the courses must be in balance with the objectives of the degree programme. Studies can be 1) optional studies of own degree programme, 2) foreign languages, 3)prep courses, 4)other degree programme studies of the School of Business and Information Management or other schools of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences or 5) from other institutions of higher education.

The aim of practical training is to familiarize students with practical duties of major importance in relation to their professional studies, in particular, and with the application of knowledge and skills in working life under supervised conditions. (Vararehtorin päätös 24.2.2014 § 16)

Practical training period or some parts of it may be attained also abroad.
