Foundations of Professional Nursing (FPN) studies equip nursing students with the primary nursing skills essential to patients' vital functions and activities of daily living needed by nurses in everyday work life. Nursing students are properly integrated with the theoretical knowledge on the basic components of the Finnish Social and Healthcare System by understanding nursing ethics, jurisprudence, legislation, and cultural studies. Nursing documentation skills are also introduced using a real patient information system used in the clinical field in accordance with the latest Finnish Care Classification. Interdisciplinary health studies are also introduced to enable nursing students to understand the factors influencing the health of a human being.

No prerequisites are needed.

The student is able to:

• integrate with the Finnish Social and Healthcare System;
• apply communication skills needed in the nursing process and nursing care plan; and
• recognise the importance of interdisciplinary studies to understand factors influencing patients' health.

Implementation of the studies will be in a hybrid format.

The integration and communication studies are mandatory courses for foreign health professional students, aimed at enhancing their social and professional skills and competencies to better prepare them for their future careers. This facilitates the empowerment of the prospective foreign workforce in the healthcare sector by fostering an understanding of Finnish culture within the context of the Social and Healthcare systems. Students will undergo rigorous training to comprehend acculturation as it relates to the Finnish healthcare environment.

No prerequisites are required for enrollment.

The nursing student is able to:

• develop essential academic skills for higher education studies.

• recognize cultural differences in a multicultural and multiprofessional environment.
• identify the Finnish social and healthcare system.
• interpret the Finnish code of ethics for nurses.
• describe the general duties and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse in Finland.

A student will be assigned a personal tutor teacher for additional guidance during their nursing studies.

Patient safety is the cornerstone for maintaining and enhancing high-quality care standards. Nurses play a pivotal role in safeguarding patients' rights to receive optimal quality care within a multidisciplinary team.

The objective of the patient safety and quality care courses is to equip nursing students with the essential skills and competencies required to uphold patient safety in clinical practicums. Students will engage in hybrid teaching formats and skills assessment activities to ensure their preparedness before embarking on clinical practicums.

The student:

• describes the main principles of fundamental nursing care;
• acquires knowledge about the concepts of safe medication administration to patients across the lifespan and learns to accurately perform drug calculations;
• recognizes the values, beliefs, and practices in a multicultural environment;
• learns how to resolve ethical dilemmas; and
• utilizes evidence-based information in tasks that demand critical thinking skills.

Interdisciplinary studies enable students to cultivate knowledge from various disciplines, enhancing their understanding of the nursing framework in a broader context, which is crucial in contemporary nursing science. This approach is exemplified by courses such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Client-centered Approach to Health Promotion, and Towards Innovations and Entrepreneurship.

Preventive, Curative, and Rehabilitative Nursing (PCRN) constitutes the fundamental learning outcomes for professional nursing. In the PCRN level, nursing students delve into essential concepts that encompass preventive strategies, curative interventions, and rehabilitative approaches in patient care. This level equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to address a diverse range of healthcare needs effectively. To enhance their practical abilities, nursing students engage in intensive theoretical study and immersive High-Fidelity Simulation (HFS) Training, where they encounter and manage various realistic case scenarios. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are well-prepared to provide holistic and proficient nursing care across a spectrum of patient requirements.

Level I studies are either in progress or have been completed without any deficits.

• develop skills in composing quantitative and qualitative research reports;
• utilize evidence-based data to analyze patient outcomes in the nursing field;
• identify the most common chronic diseases and associated nursing interventions;
• gain knowledge of appropriate nursing interventions for medical patients;
• discuss the duties and responsibilities of a perioperative nurse using the nursing process;
• develop skills in maintaining therapeutic interactions with individuals in mental health, substance abuse, and crisis situations;
• describe the significance of illness, special needs, and hospitalization meaning to children, adolescents, and their families;
• understand the normal course and follow-up procedures during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium period, along with unique care aspects for newborns;
• describe the stages of pregnancy (antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care) and relevant nursing care; and
• evaluate the necessity for care and healthcare services for individuals across different age groups and backgrounds, using comprehensively gathered information.

Evidence-based knowledge is imperative for enhancing patient outcomes within the nursing profession. A foundational aspect of delivering holistic patient care within a multidisciplinary team is the establishment of evidence-based practice principles in nursing. The advancement of patient outcomes in the nursing profession hinges on the integration of evidence-based knowledge. Establishing evidence-based practice principles is crucial for providing comprehensive patient care within a multidisciplinary team context.

Nursing students deepen their skills, knowledge, and competencies in the chosen field of specialisation. Working in a multidisciplinary team to emphasise communication, leadership, and clinical judgment skills in nursing will be the emphasis on preparing nurses for the professional work life.

Level I and Level II studies are ongoing or passed without deficits

The student is able to:

•help clients in different age groups and with special needs, different backgrounds, and developmental disabilities;
• view ageing in the elderly client-oriented approach and assess well-being, health, physical functioning, and the need for care and service;
• describe the pathophysiology of major acute diseases and disorders, interpret disturbance and physiological and vital functions and render appropriate nursing interventions;
• explain and analyse nursing leadership as well as the methods of leadership in organisations; and
•evaluate and develop medical knowledge in a goal-oriented manner.

All courses are considered obligatory. Advanced medical studies can be taken from 2 ECTS up to 10 ECTS according to the Personal Study Plan (PSP)

Advanced studies in nursing strengthen developed skills, competencies, and knowledge of students towards professional work life in nursing.

Clinical practicum in person-centered care trains nursing students to develop skills and competencies to increase patient satisfaction and implement holistic individualised care.

The student is able to:

•deliver professional nursing care together with clients and multidisciplinary teams in planning holistic care- and service plans; and
•plan, implement and evaluate gerontological nursing work ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information.

In case of accreditation, the student is given guidance for the accreditation process by the Head of the Degree Programme/teacher responsible for the option, campus study counsellors, teacher tutor, or the teacher of the course. The vulnerable populations need special consideration when planning for nursing care. Identifying the social determinants of health enable healthcare professionals such as nurses to improve person-centered care in social and healthcare services. The Clinical Practicum with the Vulnerable Population enables nursing students to develop professional competencies in addressing the special needs of children, women, and people with mental health problems to promote health outcomes.

Theoretical knowledge and skill labs are passed without deficits

The student:

• works in a multidisciplinary team and reflects on personal activities as a member of the team in caring for vulnerable groups including children, adolescents, women, and patients with mental health problems.

Clinical exposures in specialised medical care help students apply knowledge and skills critically among patients with complex health needs requiring special medical attention.

•apply personal knowledge and skills on perioperative nursing in patient-centered care and decision making; and
•plan, implement and evaluate medical-surgical nursing tasks ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information.

The Bachelor's Thesis is the final project work of a nursing student. It is part of the recommendation of the European Union Directive 55/2013 for first-cycle programmes. Students are tasked to produce academic work that is evidence-based and complies with the standards of the European scientific community level. This is composed of three parts: Drafting Process, Dissertation Assessment, and Viva.

The student has completed Level I and Level II studies.
