Degree Programme in Nursing (210 cr)

Basic and Professional Studies 113
The aim of basic studies is to provide the student with a comprehensive overall view of the position and significance of the field concerned within society and working life and in an international perspective, to familiarise the student with the general theoretical basis of the field and with communications, and to provide the student with the sufficient language proficiency necessary for practising the profession and for further professional development. (Vararehtorin päätös 13.10.2016 § 16)

The aim of professional studies is to familiarise the student with the main problems and applications in the professional field concerned and their scientific or artistic basis in order to allow the student to work independently in the field in either expert duties or development work or as an entrepreneur. (Vararehtorin päätös 13.10.2016 § 16)

If the student’s language of education (A 1129/2014 § 7 and Rector’s Decision 1.10.2021 § 78) is
• Finnish, YY00DU51 Svenska för arbetslivet (3 ECTS) is a mandatory course in the Bachelor’s degree.
• Swedish, YY00DT02 Suomen kieli ja viestintä (3 ECTS) is a mandatory course in the Bachelor’s degree.
• other than Finnish or Swedish, YY00DU55 Finnish Language 1: Survive! (3 ECTS) is a mandatory course in the Bachelor’s degree.

If the student's language of education is other than Finnish or Swedish, but their mother language is Finnish or Swedish, the student is exempted from the proficiency requirements of the second national language. In this case, it is specified in the student's personal study plan which language or other studies (3 ECTS) the student completes instead of the missing language studies due to the exemption.

It involves interdependent levels. The competencies of nursing students are assessed using a multi-modal approach. These competencies are based on the 10 domains of professional competence in nursing issued by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture: 1) ethical activity, 2) health promotion, 3) decision-making in nursing, 4) patient education, 5) collaboration, 6) research and development work and leadership, 7) multicultural nursing, 8) social activity, 9) clinical nursing and 10) medical care.

No pre-requisites are required for enrolment.

The overall goal of the basic and professional studies in nursing is to:

• assist nursing students in acquiring fundamental nursing skills crucial for patients' essential functions and daily living activities required by nurses in their daily professional duties;
• strengthen key learning outcomes for professional nursing by engaging in thorough theoretical learning and high-fidelity simulation training across diverse case scenarios;
• enhance students' skills, knowledge, and competencies in their selected specialized area;
• highlight communication, leadership, and clinical decision-making skills in nursing, thereby preparing graduate nurses for their professional careers.

Basic and Professional Studies consist of the three interdependent levels. All levels are considered obligatory.

Level I: Foundations of Professional Nursing. Foundations of Professional Nursing (FPN) studies equip nursing students with the primary nursing skills essential to patients' vital functions and activities of daily living needed by nurses in everyday work life.

Level II: Preventive, Curative, and Rehabilitative Nursing. Preventing, Curative and Rehabilitative Nursing (PCRN) constitutes the core learning outcomes for professional nursing. Nursing students undergo intensive theoretical and high-fidelity simulation training in various case scenarios.

Level III: Advanced and Specialised Nursing Care. Nursing students deepen their skills, knowledge, and competencies in the chosen field of specialisation. Working in a multidisciplinary team to emphasize communication, leadership, and clinical judgment skills in nursing will be the emphasis on preparing nurses for the professional work life. Before graduation, nursing students will be required to produce a thesis meeting the European Qualification Framework (EQF) Level 6 equivalent to a Bachelor's level.

Target Competencies: ethical activity, health promotion, decision-making in nursing, patient education, collaboration, research and development work and leadership, multicultural nursing, social activity, clinical nursing, and medical care

All theoretical parts have been passed without deficits.

The aim of practical training is to familiarise students with practical duties of major importance in relation to their professional studies, in particular, and with the application of knowledge and skills in working life under supervised conditions. (Vararehtorin päätös 13.10.2016 § 16)

List of clinical practicums in the entire nursing studies (75 ECTS)

• Clinical Practicum in Fundamentals of Nursing Care (7 ECTS)
• Clinical Practicum in Specialised Medical Care (12 ECTS): Medical-Surgical Nursing
(8 ECTS), Perioperative Nursing (6 ECTS)
